How to Care for Your Flowers

Flowers grown on our farm in Dunlap, IL

Flowers are a reminder to all of us that some joys in life are fleeting and that’s okay. Not everything is meant to last forever, and we should appreciate the beautiful things while we can.

Flowers aren’t everlasting, but you can give them the longest vase life possible. Starting with our expertly grown, properly harvested and conditioned blooms from our flower farm in Dunlap is the first step!

Buying our locally grown flowers means they haven’t been shipped all over the world before they reach you and treated with tons of chemicals prior to their journey to preserve them.

Your flowers want to live their best (vase) life so here are some tips to keep your flowers fresher, longer:

  • Start with a clean vase. Bacteria in your vase will clog the stems of your flowers and they will fade faster. If it’s not clean enough that you would drink from it, your flowers don’t want too either.

  • Change the water daily and you can give them a fresh snip with a sharp pair of scissors. Flowers like sunflowers, zinnias, yarrow, and rudbeckia have a reputation for being a “dirty flowers”. They tend to dirty up the water faster but as long as you keep the vase clean, they’ll reward you with a long display of beauty.

  • Keep them away from fresh fruit. Especially apples and bananas. The fruits emit ethylene gas that your flowers don’t like.

  • Move the vase out of direct sunlight. Heat and sunlight will speed up their decline.

  • Sunflowers turn their heads to face sunlight so you may rotate your vase if you see that happening.
